• Rust streaks down the chimney face. Copperfield caps use 304 stainless mesh and hoods, but the spot-welded corners and base rail are where moisture collects first. • Damper cap won’t open or seal fully. On Top-Mount Damper models, the cable can corrode inside the flue, or the silicone gasket hardens and loses its memory. You’ll notice smoke hesitation on startup, or a cold draft when the fireplace is idle - both mean the damper mechanism isn’t seating square.
• Cap is visibly tilted or loose. The set-screw legs on exterior-mount models back out over time, especially if the original installer didn’t use anti-seize compound. A tilted cap catches wind like a sail and will eventually drop, often taking a section of flue tile with it.
